BEAUTY ON A BUDGET: Beauty Schools Will Save You Hundreds of Dollars on Salon Services

  • Rating: No Rating

This is my very first tip and I have to admit that I think it is my favorite tip that will save you hundreds in salon services!

  • Go to a beauty school in your area for some or all your salon needs.

Beauty schools are a great alternative to going to an expensive salon.  I have to admit, the first time I went I was very apprehensive and nervous that they would mess up my hair. In retrospect, I have had my share of "hair-do faux pas" from professional stylists as well.

Only senior stylists can work on the floor which means they have had the required hours necessary to perform services for patrons.  Now don't get me wrong, they are still students and you should think of them as such.  However, to bring some solace, there is always an instructor present if they should have a questions or are in need of supervision.

I used to pay $30 and up in our local Macy's store for just a basic haircut.   I now pay $8 - $15 depending on whether or not I want add a wash before and style after the haircut.  Of course the prices will range depending on the area you live in and the individual schools themselves.   Services may also vary in each salon.  We have two beauty schools close to us that me and my 3 daughters frequent.  One is more basic and does only hair and mini manicures.  The other is a full service salon that also offers waxing, facials, manicures, pedicures; just to name a few.  So let's weigh in....

The Pros:

  • Reasonable Rates
  • Latest techniques and styles are implemented
  • Instructor supervision
  • Name brand hair product is used
  • You are actually helping a student acquire the skills and hours they need to work in a fully functioned salon.
  • Your stylist or service provider seems very eager to get your service right.  They truly aim to please and are really 'graded' from beginning to end.  So customer service is pretty darn great!
  • Did I mention the reasonable rates??

The Cons:

  • Sometimes the service may be lengthier than you are used to because the student is supervised before, during, and after the service is performed.  So make sure you go on a day that you are not in a huge hurry.  For example:  One time I received a layered haircut and my stylist had never done long layers before.  My visit ended up being 1 1/2 hours long.  But again ...just expect that some delays may be possible.
  • Weekends can be crazy busy.  I would recommend going during a weekday if your schedule allows it.  In addition, the mornings tend to be the best.
  • Honestly, I really cannot think of any other cons.  My experiences at the beauty schools have been nothing but pleasant.

I encourage you to search online for beauty schools near you today!!  Let me know what you think and what your experience was....and.....most importantly how much moolah you saved.
