EMwomen Community

It’s the day before the inauguration I just got through watching Oprah today and she had the celebrity Usher on location in D.C. and he had a group of youth volunteers working to remodel a library in a school where 50% of the students drop out. Watching the teens in the background working diligently to put out fresh new books and making a difference, living a life of service, Usher said something that is so profound and I feel is true. He said that your generation, EMGirls, will be called Generation S. A Generation of youth and people of Service. One of the important things that I took from a speech that President Obama gave was where he talks about ‘Personal Responsibility”.

Here’s what he said:

"..we must also admit that fulfilling America's promise will require more than just money. It will require a renewed sense of responsibility from each of us to recover what John F. Kennedy called our "intellectual and moral strength." Yes, government must lead on energy independence, but each of us must do our part to make our homes and businesses more efficient. Yes, we must provide more ladders to success for young men who fall into lives of crime and despair. But we must also admit that programs alone can't replace parents; that government can't turn off the television and make a child do her homework; that fathers must take more responsibility for providing the love and guidance their children need. Individual responsibility and mutual responsibility — that's the essence of America's promise."-Taken From Barack Obama's DNC acceptance speech 2008.

So young ladies, you all joined this group because you want to be different you want to make a difference in not only your life but the lives and communities around you. I challenge you to think about your own ‘personal responsibility’ and how you can make a difference. It doesn’t matter your how old you are, you can begin today.

Respond here by letting us know what ways you have or plan to make a difference in the lives of those around you and become the next Generation of people that focus on service and making a difference.

I love infants and i believe that every pregnancy, ever child is a gift from God. My heart aches for those who are aborted, who are born to poor parents, to teenage girls or just in situations where they aren't loved or wanted or able to reach there full potential. So it is my desire to be a spokes person for those babies that have not even been thought of and for those who are here and do not have a great home environment. Most of all i want to be a helping hand and ear to young girls who are walking around broken and soiled in some way, whether physical, mentally, spiritually or emotionally. And i believe that God is calling me to do these things and so much more.

Thank you guys so much for your encouraging and motivating words
I am not volunteering at this moment
i have been trying to look for volunteer stuff that would involve even just holding a baby and talking to them but i can't find any (i even tried looking for an orphanage but i guess those don't exist in the GTA)
i guess i really don't know the first place to look.
Hi Davia,
Let me do some research for you, have you tried Idealist.org, here's the website: www.idealist.org? You may even look under categories for children/babies and then contact them. But let me see what I can find for you!! We'll get you hooked up! Smile!

I want to do something to show my support for breast cancer...
Since my mom has passed away I've been concerning a lot of things with cancer.
I want to get more involved. I realized cancer is very very VERY serious. and I wish I would've had more of an experience to know that i should've done and spent more time with her than i did... But she understood i was just trying to cope and get to the realization that she would be gone soon and didn't even get mad at me.
But it hurts knowing I didn't put my all out for her during the time that we had. We were just starting to heal our relationship back up.. After he getting out of rehab and her wrongs being pushed aside for me.. and I think i just let her down. Telling people my story and getting them more involved with breast cancer would possibly make me feel better about certain things.
Hi Dayva!!!!
Thanks for your reply. You young ladies have some wonderful passions! I'm so sorry about the loss of your mother, I know it must have been so difficult. I know she definitely understood like you said about the time you spent with her towards the end. I really do think that maybe you could start or join a support group for teens whose parents have/had cancer. It would be a great way for you to provide them with comfort, encouragement and a shoulder to lean on. Are there any social networks for teens dealing with parents with cancer. Maybe when we grow EMGirls you could start a group under here as well. I'll see if I can find any resources for you. So are you in Arkansas as well. Well again thanks for sharing, it always helps to help other people when we are hurting or sad. Hugs to you Dayva, I know that God will use you and your story to help others!

I feel that I make a difference in everyone's life who I know. I'm the person everyone comes to when they have an issue and I seem to have no problem helping them and most of the time I can't help myself. But I am always there for my friend and family when they need me and I never turn my back on them. But I also try to set a good example for others to follow. I am a drum major, on the step team, in FBLA [Future Business Leaders of America], and I make A's and B's. I figure that doing all that will inspire others and let them know they can do whatever they put their minds to. They just have to have hope, determination, and pride.
Hi Brittany! You go girl, you are a busy lady!! As a teen I never participated in anything extracuricular and it definietly effected my self esteem and ability to try new things in my adult life. So kudos to you for stepping out there and knowing you strenghts, getting your dance on and being a future business leader. Do you have any ideas what you want to major in or be when you 'grow up'? Also it's so nice to be that person that people can come to about their situations, make sure you have an outlet as well and get the same support. Keep up the great work in school and continue to look for ways to support and help those in your community as well and since you so many of your friends come to you get them to also think of ways they can volunteer and do things for others too! Again Brittany I'm really impressed with where you are and headed in your life. I can't wait to watch the wonderful things that will come to and through you in 2009 and beyond!!
